If you go to Rome, I highly recommend the "Oxford Archaeological Guide to Rome".
Without it, you will miss much of what there is to see.

Colosseum (Colosseo) Colosseum (Colosseo)
Built by the Flavian Emperors in the mid 70's AD, the Colosseum was originally called the Flavian Amphitheater. It was built on the site of a stagnant lake and site of Nero's Golden House, transforming a symbol of Nero's tyrannical rule and excess into a site of public enjoyment. Before the construction of the amphitheater, there stood on that spot a colossal statue of Nero, thus the name "Colloseum". Contrary to popular belief, most likely very few Christians were killed in the arena, the majority of the victims would have been slaves, criminals and gladiators.

The Colosseum could be flooded and mock sea battles were performed. There were trap doors in the floor to allow animals to come up from below or for scenery to be taken out of the arena.
